What needed to change.

This work was delivered inside a leading UK DIY ecommerce business whose brand cannot be named publicly. The business had strong website traffic and a growing customer base, but too little of that attention became an owned email audience. Popup forms were easy to ignore, checkout capture was underused and campaigns were often sent too broadly.

The first priority was improving how people joined the list. More engaging popup forms gave visitors a clearer reason to subscribe, while the checkout journey was redesigned to capture consent at a moment when customers were already invested in the brand.

With a much larger audience, the campaign programme became more regular and more relevant. Customers were segmented by the products they had bought, so emails could continue their project, introduce complementary products and provide useful advice instead of sending the same promotion to everyone.

How we improved it.

01

Grow the audience

Designed more engaging popup forms with clearer value, stronger creative and better timing. Together with improved checkout capture, this grew the email list by 300% in three months.

02

Improve checkout capture

Redesigned how customers were invited to join the mailing list at checkout so consent felt clear, relevant and connected to the purchase they were already making.

03

Segment by purchase

Built targeted audiences based on what customers had bought. This allowed campaigns to feature more relevant products, advice and reasons to return instead of relying on broad sends.

04

Send better emails more often

Built a consistent campaign calendar and raised the quality of the copy, design and product storytelling. More targeted sends meant the larger audience could be contacted more regularly without losing relevance.

The result

The list grew by 300% in three months. Better creative, a higher sending rhythm and targeting based on customer purchases helped increase monthly revenue attributed to email from £25,000 to £55,000. A focused campaign also reengaged 23% of an inactive audience.
